✎ Blanc de Prestige / Jupiló: A Review of the Niche Perfume with a Champagne Scent

Choosing a fragrance for the first review in the series TOP 10 from Exence 2023 was tough. So I thought about what other hobbies I have besides perfumes… and here’s the review of Blanc de Prestige / Jupiló, the scent of champagne. No, I don’t drink. But last year was kind of… sparkling. I’m a hydrangea lover, and in June I discovered the Schloss Wackerbarth hydrangea, bred in Pirna to resemble a freshly poured glass of chilled sparkling wine from the vineyards of Wackerbath Castle near Dresden. Of course, I went to the castle to taste the maturing sparkling wine in the bottle (the „real champagne“ – what they call „crémant“ in France). I had no idea that it was even possible to grow grapes with a high sugar content so far north to ferment into champagne. Blanc de Prestige / Jupiló Review.

Jupilo Blanc de Prestige review In August, we were at the opposite end of Europe: in the Moldovan underground city of Cricova, which hides the largest handmade production of true „champagne“ in the Eastern Bloc along 100 kilometers of tunnel streets. The atmosphere was completely different but equally impressive… and here I discovered Crisecco and Igristoe (contrary to popular belief, they produce Igristoe using the traditional „champenoise“ method, and it tastes like… great champagne. And they don’t fuss much about terminology here – when I asked, they said they „know it can’t be called champagne, but they call it champagne,“ time hasn’t moved much here either…) Blanc de Prestige Jupilo review So when I opened the sample box, the trained eye of a winemaker first fell on the „Blanc de Prestige“ label in the sample set of the new Italian brand Jupiló, founded by Italian sommelier Lorenzo Zaccheo. His joy for life was probably similar to mine, just professional: traveling through the vineyards of Italy and France, discovering wines, tasting… and because it was never enough for him, he transformed all those alcohol scents into bottles.

Blanc de Prestige / Jupiló Review

Chardonnay named Blanc de Blanc from the Côte des Blancs region in Champagne inspired Lorenzo to create a champagne fragrance with all its facets. Blanc de Prestige / Jupiló Review I only drink Brut, dry champagne, and over time I’ve learned to distinguish fragrant notes and sort them by origin: floral and fruity notes come from the berries themselves, tannins – the scent of green tea and soil – from the skins and seeds, the scent of peaches comes from the yeast, earthy tobacco tones from withered and rotten stems and leaf remnants… I don’t drink as much as I used to, and this fragrance perfectly matches what I look for in wine.

Freshness without Citrus

The sharply acidic start perfectly captures the freshness of grape picking: green leaves, tart blackcurrant buds, sour-tart grape skins… yes, bergamot and white pepper are noticeable in the ingredient list when I focus (but don’t do it, just enjoy the grapes). After picking, it’s straight to consumption: fresh, chilled sparkling dry drink. Into the faithful bouquet of white sparkling wine with metallic reflections came those sparkling peaches, the scent of yeast, with the addition of delicate rose, lily of the valley, and freesia. A little, just a little, of violet candies adds a plastic saccharin aftertaste to the sip when you swallow the sour wine (for my mom, dry wine is sour, you get it). I have a photorealistic sensation of champagne on my tongue, and Pavlov’s reflex to sour taste kicked in. Charming, elegant, distinctive, and sophisticated freshness. Nobility itself. The final phase is pure freshness. It’s interesting that although the fragrance is built on fresh notes, they neither evaporate nor change their sharpness. On the contrary, towards the end, the sillage transitions into an aspirin-like sharpness, a pleasant synthetic acidity that is directly felt on the tongue. Interesting, downright captivating, and pleasant.   Jupilo Blanc de Prestige review

JUPILÓ bottle caps represent the olfactory pyramid

Oh, and one thing: extraordinary intensity and longevity for such a light fragrance. It’s not common, and a really small amount is enough for good scenting.

And now the WOW moment for perfume history connoisseurs

Inside the fragrance, there’s a peculiar, unusual tone. Old paper… dry leaves… carob… cocoa bean… cherry pit… I thought about it for three days! Then it occurred to me to check the official website for the composition, and they mention „Mon Chéri accord“ – you know them, bitter chocolate candies filled with cherry liqueur. I don’t literally smell it, but after thorough testing, it dawned on me that Blanc de Prestige actually has quite an 80s/90s vibe. Freshness of this type was popular when cocaine was considered a nice refreshment and disco was seen as the beginning of the West’s decline. Probably the most beautiful time of the 20th century. And it started to make sense: all those blackcurrant buds, champagne bubbles in peach aldehyde, freesia, and lilies of the valley, sour berries… this is a reminiscence of Sophia Grojsman and her famous fragrances! It’s the great-grandchild of Calyx / Clinique and 100% Love / S-Perfume (or Rose Rebelle / What we do…). The wonderful Sophia Grojsman became famous in the 80s for inventing the synthetic sparkling fresh accord – especially due to the overdose of peach/apricot aldehyde. This idea was as innovative and successful as disco and completely embraced perfumery for the next 20 years. I went through her fragrances (she made a lot, and you probably know many – Exc!amation /Coty, Paris/YSL, Champagne/YSL…) and noticed that where peach and red berries, her famous accord, are present, the description often mentions „an inseparable part is cocoa… bitter chocolate… praline…“ BINGO! Mon Chéri. I got it. This subtle return to a brilliant composition still works. Why reinvent disco when we already have fantastic Disco Games? Great fragrance, good idea, and excellent execution.

Parfumer is who?

I was curious about the perfumer – the fragrance was created by perfumers at Atelier Fragranze Milano, led by Luca Maffei. Luca is an incredibly prolific author, and it’s good that other perfumers work on his ideas because Luca has one exceptional quality: he knows perfumery and knows how to work with it. His economically functioning mind can arrange information about how ingredients work together, how they affect people, how the perfume will develop over time – he once described it at Esxence, and it was like listening to AI, precise, factual, experienced… Perfumery is art, creativity is the disruption of established procedures… but for it to work, you first need to have mastered the craft perfectly. Luca has that.

Why wear Blanc de Prestige / Jupilo:

Let’s summarize:

  • It’s a smart freshness: the freshness is created by layers of fruit slices, champagne bubbles, lily of the valley petals, and vine leaves.
  • It lasts long and doesn’t contain any of those annoying new molecules that are ubiquitous and bore us.
  • It’s different yet familiar, original yet not offensive.
  • Freshness is trendy, and we want to not only be trendy but also enjoy it.
  • Because knowing I have something from the world’s perfumery treasury on me feels like wearing a gold Cartier bra under a t-shirt.
  • Because brilliant things will always remain brilliant: Porsche 911, Hanka Zagorová, hydrangeas, and Dom Pérignon 2000 never made anyone sad.

And so, friends:

Champagne, champagne for everyone !!!
